Home teams off to flying start at NEVZA event in Göteborg
The first day of the zonal tournament held at the Beach Center in Göteborg, aka NEVZA Beach Sweden, brought a lot of success for the home teams. Carried by an enthusiastic crowd, many of the Swedish teams stormed into the quarterfinals.
Hometown hero Sigrid Simonsson was happy with her and her partner Tadva Yoken’s first day in Göteborg after their second straight win. “To play on home soil is always special, in a great way. We have a good feeling after two wins out of two matches and the cheers from a great home crowd. It’s going to be fun to continue our journey tomorrow and hopefully we will be getting better and better with each game we play,” she said.
The Swedish pairs Martin Appelgren/Simon Boman, Linus Tholse/Jakob Molin and Sofia Ögren/Sofia Wahlén, also had a good day at the office and scored two straight wins as well.
“It was such an amazing feeling to get this amount of support from friends, family and club members today. The venue is great and we just enjoyed playing all day long,” said Martin Appelgren after their win against Denmark’s Martin Trans Hansen/Mads Rosager.
As expected, Latvia’s wildcard holders Rihards Finsters and Aleksandrs Solovejs were successful Friday, but home hero Alexander Annerstedt and his young partner David Åhman made them work hard in the second round.
Saturday’s matches start at 10 am and everyone is looking forward to another day of fantastic Beach Volleyball at the Beach Center, the world’s biggest Beach Volleyball arena. Beside the NEVZA zonal event, four other tournaments are taking place this weekend to account for a big sand party in Göteborg.
